The three students that I selected for my reading lesson were all shy and struggling readers. I discussed with my mentor teacher about them and she agreed with the selection. One of the main issues we addressed was comprehension and asking questions during reading. What do I know, What Don't I know, What do I wonder, What Do I want to know more about. This lesson was geared towards the ability of readers to think about their own thinking. All 3 students struggle with being confident in what they are reading and what they understand about the reading.
I see classroom based reading assessment the most. Students take reading comprehension assignments. I don't see the portfolio method.
A Portfolio approach would have made my lesson a lot more specific. If I had a collection of the students repsonse to reading assignments I could have narrowed in on each of their individual needs much better. The lesson was relativley broad, it covered comprehension through self questioning. However if I had a compilation of work from the students I could have found out which particular questions the students had trouble asking themselves or ones that they were confident with.
