chapter 16-23

This last part of the books deals with the lives of Navajo and how they were moving in a large mass with the spanish "long knives" keeping them in check and watching guard. The Navajo hear stories of other Indians being killed and scalped. The mass of Indians eventually settles down and they are forced to build shelters and reestablish a place to live. Spring, Summer and winter pass as bright morning and her family live among the town of the Spanish. Bright Morning and her family eventually escape and are on the run. They eventually settle into a cave on a cliff and the story concludes.

The last part of the book kept pace with the story. Moving through seasons quickly and keeping the story moving along. I think this last portion of the book was worthwhile for students because it detailed Bright Morning and her families escape toward a better life. It is the culmination of the book and really shows the trouble and hardship that the Navajo went through.

Overall I think this book would be a good read for an upper elementary class that is dealing with a Native American theme. It mixes elements of real history and more mature content without straying from being a book that younger students could read.
