Genre: Persuasive Writing

Lesson using persuasive writing:

Take the students outside to a park, playground, or a community area to look around. Have them take a stand on something at that place (i.e. if the student thinks they need a new slide) and write a letter to the mayor, principal, or community leader that explains the problem and why they think it should be changed. Explain that the letter should be clear with examples and evidence. Model what it looks like to use evidence to support a position. Explain that it should appeal to "logic, moral character, or emotions" (Tompkins, p. 54).
Alternative: If you are not able to leave the school, have students think of something they want changed inside the school (i.e. longer lunch time). Have them write a  letter to the principal explaining the problem and why it should be fixed using examples and evidence.
